Paul Sandby’s drawing of a shrimp seller was meant to be turned into a print for a further series of ‘London Cries’. However, despite making at least seventy-six studies, such as this one, he never published more than the first series of twelve etchings.
Sandby included a number of fish and seafood vendors in his work for the series. Amongst them are fish-, oyster-, crab- and mackerel-sellers. This rather demure shrimp girl is a striking contrast to the raucous girl selling mackerel. (1759)
